tar.gz

A file format (tar) and the name of the program used to handle such files (Gzip). Tar is generally used to gather several files into one larger file for distribution or archiving, while preserving file information such as permissions, dates, and directory structures. Gzip is used to compress and extract files. Drupal is distributed in both traditional .zip and tar.gz formats. Tar.gz is not supported in Windows without third-party software.
